Swarm Slide Show #2

As soon as they began to pitch, I grabbed some deep supers and stacked them up, setting a hive with frames of honeycomb on the top of the stack, so it was touching the swarm. I used an old plywood cover with the corner broken off, so that the swarm could move into the box through the gap. I tried to be very gentle; as sometimes swarms will just take off, if you disturb them in the daytime. If you are going to shake them off a limb, it had better be late in the evening.

The Hive is Placed on a Stack

Ever so gently, move the hive right up 'til it's touching the cluster. This way they can smell the nice smell of the old beeswax comb. To make it even more appealing, I dribbled a little syrup over the combs.
